Compensating Cables

These cables can also be termed instrumentation cables since they are used for process temperature measurement. The construction is similar to paired instrumentation cable but the conductor material is different. Thermocouple extension or compensating cables essentially transfer reference junctions to the control room. Thermocouples are used in processes to sense temperature and are connected to the pyrometers for indication and control. The thermocouple and pyrometers are electrically connected by Extension/Compensating Cables. The conductors used for these cables are required to have similar thermoelectric (emf) properties as that of the thermocouple used for sensing the temperature. The compensated connectors are built to withstand severe applications with maximum service life. Their pin contacts are made with the same alloy thermocouples. Thermocouples can be provided with different connectors for the output signal. There are mountable connectors of both standard and miniature sizes. There are also molded connectors fixedly connected to the sensor or cable. Today, compensation materials are most commonly used as replacement materials for the precious metal thermocouples R, S, and B. The pins on thermocouple contacts are unique to prevent the reversal of polarity.
